mrs. yerbich: multi-age (2nd-5th Grade) Teacher
Mrs. Kathleen Yerbich teaches multiage at American Charter Academy. Her story begins with a story. One of my earliest memories is sitting with my dad on a well-worn couch in a modest home in Connecticut. The book was Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farms and I was three. From the time I was four until seventeen-the one constant in my childhood was the morning routine: get up early; deliver newspapers; eat breakfast; and then read for an hour before school. The setting was our living room. My three brothers and I had our spot with our dad close by. We all read. My dad chose the books and like Charles Dickens said, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”
The next chapter of my life would be considered in the genre of action/adventure. I joined the Navy and was shipped off to the west coast. Most of my military service years were spent as a narcotics drug dog handler. Life turned my pages and my day's focus became home and children. When my youngest entered kindergarten, I went back to college and obtained my teaching credentials. I earned my master’s degree as a Reading Specialist from University of Southeast Alaska. I taught a few years at a private school before coming to American Charter. I work diligently to instill the love of reading to my students. I choose stories that are interesting, challenging, funny, poignant, and the list goes on. I have built a library around my students' interests. My shelves are full. It reminds me of the small living room in a modest home in Connecticut.
